"electic blue" cichlids, not getting blue?

We have, as you have probably seen on some of our other post, 5 of the Cichlids that we know as "electric blues" dont know the technical name. We got them at the swap in waterloo back last november. They are maybe 2 to 2 and half inches and not much for blue. a little on a couple of their noses, and one is pretty much white, albino looking. We started with 8 of them, hoping to get them in the 55gal sooner, but that is only now becoming a reality. They are currently in a 20 gal hex, and due to unfortunate events, 8 has become 5. They have been eating Dainichi Cichlid XL pro baby sinking food. Is their small tank holding back their color from coming out, their food, or are these fish just not going to get as pretty as the picture was?
Thanks for everyone's help, This site and group has been so helpful as we grow into the fish world

Small tank has a little to do with it. Size is another thing. They are actually a little small yet. Get them up to 3+ inches and they will get color. Some fish just color up slower than others.

i believe size of tank has alot to do with that.
in a 55 or bigger tank, they would in 6 month 4 inches.
also water changes are very helpful as well

Mine didn't really color up real good until they were 3 1/2" to 4", then they were "electric", the scientific name is Sciaenochromis fryeri or Sciaenochromis ahli.

What i've notice with mine you might have to give them territory and or structure of some sort. i have a couple hundred in a 55 gal tank and only have a few coloring up at the moment. I gave them two strawberry pots and some clay tubes. Now I have a few more males. i feel they need prime realestate before they will show there color or want to show there color. They need a place to take the ladies once they have attracted them.

I have 2 females holding right now if you are looking for a new batch of electric blues, I've been getting about 10 albinos per spawn. All I want is for you to pay shipping. I'll raise them for a month or so- until they are 1inch (shippable size) --ToddAnthony
